Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes, hard water is safe to drink. Health Canada sets no health-based limit on hardness, because the calcium and magnesium that make water hard are dietary minerals, not contaminants. Very hard water tastes mineral and is hard on plumbing, but it will not harm you.

Why hard water is safe to drink

Health Canada treats hardness as an operational and aesthetic matter, not a health one, and sets no maximum limit for it. The calcium and magnesium in hard water are the same minerals found in food, and they add a small amount to your daily intake. Hardness is about scale and taste, not safety.

When very hard water is a nuisance, not a hazard

Very hard water can taste chalky or metallic, spot dishes, and leave scale that wears out kettles and water heaters. These are cost and comfort issues, not illness. If the taste bothers you, a simple jug or tap filter improves it without changing whether the water is safe.

The one thing to watch: softened water and sodium

A standard ion-exchange softener removes calcium and magnesium and adds a little sodium in their place. The amount is small, but anyone on a strict low-sodium diet may prefer to drink and cook from an unsoftened tap, or to use a potassium-chloride softener. Many homes leave the kitchen cold tap unsoftened for exactly this reason.

Hard water, skin, and hair

Hard water can leave a soap film that makes skin feel tight and hair feel rough, and it is a common nuisance, but there is no good evidence it causes hair loss or skin disease. If it bothers you, a showerhead filter or a vinegar rinse helps. It does not make the water unsafe.

Hard water and health, in brief

Can hard water make you sick?

No. Hardness is not a contaminant and Health Canada sets no health limit for it. Hard water is safe to drink.

Is it better to drink hard or soft water?

Both are fine. Hard water adds a little calcium and magnesium; softened water adds a little sodium. It comes down to taste and any dietary needs.

Does hard water cause hair loss?

There is no evidence hard water causes hair loss. It can leave residue that makes hair feel dry or dull, which a filter or rinse can ease.
