Aurora Forecast
A northern-lights check for your CA location. It blends the current NOAA Kp index, the aurora oval, and your geomagnetic latitude into a plain tonight readout.
Showing a sensible default until you set your own place. Your location stays in your browser.
Calculating for the default place.
How the aurora check works
The tool fetches NOAA SWPC planetary K-index and OVATION aurora data through a cached site endpoint. Visitors share that cache window, so the page does not make one upstream NOAA request per person.
Visibility still depends on darkness, cloud, light pollution, and your northern horizon. A strong Kp makes aurora possible farther south, but it does not promise a visible display from every yard.
Aurora Forecast questions
What is Kp?
Kp is a planetary geomagnetic activity index. Higher values mean aurora can reach farther from the poles.
Is NOAA data paid?
No. NOAA SWPC publishes these JSON feeds publicly and the site caches them before showing them here.
