How the aurora check works
The tool fetches NOAA SWPC planetary K-index and OVATION aurora data through a cached site endpoint. Visitors share that cache window, so the page does not make one upstream NOAA request per person.
Visibility still depends on darkness, cloud, light pollution, and your northern horizon. A strong Kp makes aurora possible farther south, but it does not promise a visible display from every yard.

Can I see the northern lights tonight?
Set your place above and the tool gives a plain verdict from the live Kp index and the current aurora oval. Even on a yes, you still need darkness, a clear sky, and an open view north, so check the cloud layer and get away from streetlights.
How far south can the aurora be seen?
It scales with the Kp index. Around Kp 5 the oval can brush the northern-tier regions; at Kp 7 or higher a strong storm can push visible aurora into southern Ontario and the northern United States. The current solar maximum makes those strong nights more frequent than usual.
What is Kp?
Kp is a planetary geomagnetic activity index from 0 to 9. Higher values mean aurora can reach farther from the poles.
Is NOAA data paid?
No. NOAA SWPC publishes these JSON feeds publicly and the site caches them before showing them here.
