Flooring and Tile Calculator

Add room area, waste, box coverage, and underlayment so a flooring order has enough material without turning the spare pile into another project.

For 268 sq ft of straight-layout flooring at 23.5 sq ft per box, order 13 boxes and plan about 26.8 sq ft of waste.

Rooms

How to use it

  1. Enter the area. Add up to three rooms, or enter a known total area to override the room boxes.
  2. Choose material and layout. Pick laminate, vinyl plank, hardwood, or tile, then choose straight, diagonal, or herringbone layout.
  3. Enter box coverage. Use the square feet per box printed on the flooring package.
  4. Check the order. Use the result for waste square footage, boxes, and underlayment rolls, then confirm before you buy.

How this works

The calculator sums room area unless you enter a total area override. It then multiplies the area by the waste factor, divides by square feet per box, and rounds boxes up to the next whole box. Underlayment rolls are rounded up from the actual floor area.

Sources

Waste factors follow common manufacturer installation guidance, including Diamond W plank and herringbone installation instructions, which recommend extra material for cutting and grading allowance and more for diagonal layouts. Your flooring package, tile pattern, and installer layout should override a planning estimate.

Flooring calculator questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?

This calculator uses 10 percent waste for straight layouts and 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone layouts. Complex rooms, bad subfloors, or matching lots can need more.

Should I use room dimensions or total area?

Use room dimensions if you are still measuring. If a contractor or plan already gave you a total square footage, enter that total and it will override the room boxes.

Why are boxes rounded up?

Flooring is sold by the box. If your needed area is even slightly over a full box count, you need the next full box unless your retailer sells loose pieces.

Does underlayment use the waste factor?

No. The calculator sizes underlayment rolls from the actual floor area, not the flooring waste area, because underlayment is normally rolled across the room rather than cut like finish flooring.

Can this replace installer measurements?

No. Use it as a planning estimate, confirm before you buy, and follow the flooring maker's installation instructions for acclimation, expansion gaps, and layout.
