Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp melted butter, for brushing

Steps

  1. Stir the warm milk, yeast, honey, egg, melted butter, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Add the whole wheat flour and 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, then mix to a soft dough.
  3. Knead 8 to 10 minutes, adding only enough flour to keep the dough from sticking badly.
  4. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  5. Shape into 12 rolls and set in a greased 9 by 13 inch pan. Rise 35 to 45 minutes, until puffy.
  6. Heat the oven to 190 C (375 F) and bake 18 to 22 minutes, until golden. Brush with melted butter.

Notes

A slightly tacky dough makes softer rolls. Too much flour turns them dense.

Pairing Serve with potato leek soup or roast chicken.
